The case of Spring-Heeled Jack who was reported to have been sighted all over England during the Victorian era is often regarded the first instance of what is now known as 'mass-hysteria.' Since then, the media has capitalised on human ignorance/lack of knowledge and awareness to cultivate fear. Fear-mongering is still incredibly prevalent today, with politicians and the media jumping at any opportunity to pin issues and events on minority groups, stirring up support for fascist measures through instilling fear in the average person, who often relies on publications such as The Daily Telegraph and other mainstream media sources for an insight into the world in which we live. These publications provide one-sided accounts of world issues and have continually been employed as tools by which to manipulate and capitalise on fear and a lack of education.
